Woman drowns retrieving dog from frozen pond

PLAINSBORO, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey authorities say a woman drowned trying to retrieve her grandson's dog from a frozen pond.
Authorities say 61-year-old Janet Howard was walking a German Shepherd named Apollo on Saturday when it wandered onto the ice covering Plainsboro Pond. Police speculate that Howard went after the dog but the ice broke, plunging her and the animal into the water about 25 feet from shore.

Gilbert teen gets financing for trip to medical forum

Alex Bommarito worked 81 hours during a recent two-week period. He didn't need to.

SF wants tiger-maul survivor to pay $75000 for medical care

Kulbir Dhaliwal and his brother have sued the San Francisco Zoo and police department for injuries they suffered in the infamous Christmas 2007 tiger attack that left a friend dead. He suffered deep bite wounds and needed surgery on his knees

Slaying suspect's medical records sought

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Investigators in Virginia are seeking medical records for a man charged with killing his stepdaughter.
A search warrant was filed Wednesday, The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot reported. Police asked for Kentrell Sanderson's records and psychiatric evaluations from a four-day hospital stay immediately after his Sept. 20 arrest.
The body of Shatierra Sigler was found that day in her family's apartment in Norfolk.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bernie Hamilton, the actor who played the no-nonsense police captain on the 1970s TV series "Starsky and Hutch," died Tuesday. He was 80.
Hamilton died of cardiac arrest at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, said his son, Raoul Hamilton.

Kentucky girl's family suing Loyola University Medical Center

girl who died after undergoing a heart procedure at Loyola University Medical Center is suing the hospital and her physicians, saying they knew she had a latex allergy but still used a latex-tipped catheter during the operation.
Kara Eubanks of Calhoun, Ky., died three days after going into cardiac arrest as doctors performed a procedure in 2007, said the lawsuit filed Wednesday. A Loyola spokeswoman declined to comment on the suit.

Corn-dust blast that injured 2 men investigated

Officials from the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health are investigating a Maricopa grain-supply company where explosions left three workers severely burned on Monday.
